In December 2006, I turned up to volunteer at an animal rescue centre in the Andes of Ecuador. The week before, 4 circus lions had been delivered to the centre, one was blind from jumping through rings of fire, and none had experienced the apparent luxury which is grass. With no time to acclimatise it was straight to work, these Lions needed a place to roam asap.
